Watertreatment

Aside from engineering totally new installations, we can also be your specialised partner for the optimization of existing systems, using the most appropriate chemical water treatment.

Neglecting you water management can lead to high costs due to service disruption, increased maintenance, increased fuel consumption, loss of production and costly equipment replacement. The most efficient solution to prevent these problems can be done by implementing a properly designed water treatment program.

According to your needs and demands, we can provide you with:

  1. Boiler water treatments

    Boiler water treatments

    In General

An inefficient use of steam boilers can lead to high fuel consumption costs and costly maintenance due to the replacement of damaged equipment.

Interindus can provide a customized program for any steam boiler operation - varying from a single treatment product for smaller systems to a multiple product program for larger steam plant operations to make sure that the system is operating efficiently and protected against:

    • corrosion
    • corrosion of condensate lines
    • deposit formation
    • sludge accumulation

Before starting up a treatment program the feed water quality, the steamboiler operation and working conditions will be thoroughly examined, to ensure the new treatment program will provide effective results. Specialized treatment programs can provide removals of existing boiler deposits from deficient treatments.

    Prevention of Corrosion

Raw water can have varying amounts of corrosive gases. Dissolved oxygen is highly corrosive in steam boiler systems when not properly reduced by an oxygen scavenger.

Result: extremely localized pitting, causing rapid deterioration of the tubes that makes replacement of the boiler tubes necessary.

Carbon dioxide gases may lead to the formation of carbonic acid in condensate lines, causing a generalized loss of metal. One of our specialised steam boiler treatment programs is to provide an effective oxygen scavenger and a neutralizing amino to prevent this form of corrosion.

An efficient boiler water treatment program includes the the monitoring of other forms of corrosion such as dissimilar metals, stress cracking, intergranular corrosion and crevice corrosion.

    Prevention of Deposit Formation

In raw water we find varying amounts of mineral salts such as magnesium, iron, calcium and silica. Exceeding their solubility point due to the rise of water temperature and increased concentration, these minerals precipitate out of solution and produce scale forming salts.

Adhering directly to heating surfaces, these deposits form layers of insulation on the metal with a negative influence on the heat transfer and an increasing fuel consumption as result.

    Prevention of Sludge Accumulation

Interindus can provide steam boiler programs that incorporate polymeric and organic sludge dispersants which allows the sludge to exit the boiler by regular blowdown schedules. Deficient dispersion of sludge results in a high accumulation of sludge that restricts circulation and affects heat transfer efficiency.

Interindus Boiler Water Treatment Program and Services

Our boiler water treatment programs are based on a unique product that controls corrosion in the boiler and in the condensate lines. Moreover our programs eliminate deposits, clean the boiler tubes and have an antifoam effect.

Our products can be used when steam contacts food. Control can be fully automised.

    • 500 - series: dispersants for boiler water scales and mud.
    • 600 - series: dispersants for internal boiler water treatment to avoid corrosion and deposits.
    • 700 - series: corrosion-inhibitors for the protection of the boiler, the steam and the condensate lines against oxygen and carbonic-acid corrosion.

    Services

In addition to the regular on site testing provided by our technical staff, test kits for boiler operators are provided. This enables your operators to conduct regular on site water testing and ensures that the recommended program is maintained.

Interindus can also survey your existing external treatment equipment and feed equipment to optimize the present treatment program.

  2. Cooling water treatments

    Cooling water treatments

    In General

Cooling water towers and condenser systems can easily be affected by corrosion, scale and fouling formation due to:

    • the high saturation of corrosive dissolved oxygen in the basic water,
    • cycling up of minerals that form scale deposits,
    • galvanic corrosion due to the dissimilar metals in the system,
    • the introduction of air-bourne contaminants causing fouling,
    • under-deposit corrosion caused by fouling contamination,
    • the breeding conditions for bacteria, fungi, algae, Legionella,

    Prevention of Corrosion

The corrosion of condenser systems parts such as condenser tube sheets, circulating pumps and cooling towers can lead to high costs due to service disruption, increased maintenance, loss of production and costly equipment replacement. Raw water quality must be taken into account to determine the most effective type of treatment program.

    Prevention of Scale

Raw water contains different amounts of mineral salts ( calcium, magnesium, iron, silica). Due to increased cycles of concentration these minerals exceed their solubility point and produce scale forming salts. Formation of scale deposits results in a loss of cooling transfer efficiency, leading directly to increased cooling costs.

Interindus has designed inhibitor programs to prevent minerals from precipitating out and forming scale deposits. This enables our customers to run at higher cycles of concentration, in comparison with untreated systems, reducing water usage and discharge.

    Prevention of Fouling

Re-circulating water can become contaminated with a variety of materials from the the environmental air that contains particles of dust and different kinds of dirt. This creates fouling on the inside surfaces of condenser systems leading to under-deposit corrosion and a loss of cooling transfer efficiency.

Since they contain warm water, are open to sunlight and form a micro environment for a variety of life forms and nutrient sources, cooling towers form ideal breeding environments for fungi, bacteria and algae. Having found a convenient place, some of these forms can attach to them and frequently corrosion is found beneath these surfaces. Cooling towers provide also ideal breeding conditions for pathogenic bacteria such as Legionella pneumophila. Legionnaires' Disease is thought to be transmitted by airborne water droplets and can cause a fatal form of pneumonia.

The implementation of a properly designed treatment program of biocides offers the most effective solution to control biological fouling. Installing a back-washable sand filter on a side-stream of the condenser water will be a great improvement in controlling the build up of suspended solids in the circulating water and on internal surfaces.

Interindus has developed a range of biocide treatment products to control biological fouling and provides assistance in filtration needs to remove suspended solids from the system.

    Treatment Dosing Equipement

To work effectively, the treatment products must be properly fed into the cooling system. Corrosion and scale inhibitors should be maintained at a constant level. Biocides are most effective when applied in slug doses on a product alternated basis.

Interindus can provide an automatic treatment feed and bleed-off equipment to ensure the system is properly maintained. Our system utilizes a proportional feed and automatic bleed-off scale based upon the volume of make-up water entering the system.

    Other Services

We advice to install corrosion coupons to continuously monitor the rate of corrosion in all closed systems. The type of coupon depends on the type of metal in the system our customers prefer to monitor. The mild steel and copper coupons are the most common. The coupons should be installed in the system for 6 - 12 months. Results are expressed as a corrosion rate in MPY (mils per year).

Regular testing of the condenser water and observation of the condition of the equipment is necessary to maintain performant chemical levels and to ensure immediate action in case of sudden system disruptions. It is much easier to keep a system under control than to get it back under control.

Interindus can provide testing equipment and on site testing service.

  4. Heat Transfer Fluid with corrosion inhibition and FDA Approval

Heat Transfer Fluid with Corrosion Inhabition and FDA Approval

Dowcal N heat transfer fluid is an economically high quality fluid designed for a temperature range of -45 °C to +120 °C. The clear, pale yellow liquid is a formulated specially inhibited propylene glycol to provide superior protection and operating performance in a wide variety of heat transfer applications. The low acute oral toxicity of propylene glycol and of its special non-toxic inhibitors makes Dowcal N particularly suitable for food and beverage chilling and freezing applications.

Is there a difference? Heat transfer fluids are absolutely not all the same. They must address a wide range of often vastly different process-specific needs. The only feature they really have in common is that once filled into the system, they are invisible - as is the damage they may cause in the long term if the wrong product is selected for a given application. When the first leak occurs as the result of corrosion or gasket decomposition, major equipment overhauls are usually unavoidable. That's why it pays to carefully select a heat transfer fluid.

Compared to alternative fluids and non-fluid methods, Dowcal N fluids can improve process efficiency and reduce costs and mostly both. In the applications covered by Dowcal N, frequently used heat transfer fluids include plain water, uninhibited glycols, and alcohols. Dowcal N masters other heat transfer fluids because:

    • Dowcal N outperforms plain water: water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C, what limits its suitability for many applications. Moreover it corrodes many metals.
    • Dowcal N outperforms uninhibited glycols: uninhibited glycols extend the useful temperature range of heat transfer fluids but they are corrosive and degrade quickly at higher temperatures.
    • Dowcal N outperforms alcohols: alcohols pose a fire hazard. Some alcohols, like methanol, are toxic.

    Key features of Dowcal N:

    • better freeze protection,
    • better corrosion protection in hot and cold systems,
    • FDA-approved safe food additive,
    • compatibility with commonly used elastomers,
    • confirmed biodegradability,
    • longer fluid life,
    • lower maintenance cost,
    • better heat transfer efficiency,
    • greater cost-effectiveness.
